Hudson Valley Flute Instruction

Private lessons:

Your child loves music, you've tried piano lessons and you bought that plastic recorder, but the interest seems to be fading and the musical engagement and fun you hoped for is not happening --now what?

If that sounds like you, I can help!

Weekly private lessons are a chance for kids to learn solid technique and musicianship skills, while maintaining good posture, getting a great sound and mastering the flute through a step-by-step process.

Group classes emphasize teamwork, listening and ensemble skills.

Group classes:

Little Pipers (ages 4-6)

An introduction to the magic of the flute for youngsters. Children learn basic skills including standing still, holding the instrument, creating a sound, and their first songs. I always include games and activities that make learning fun.

Maximum of four students (45 minutes weekly, 5-week program)

Examples:

  • To make a beautiful flute sound students learn to sustain their breath by blowing things around the classroom, like feathers and bubbles.

  • To learn how to hold the flute and develop good hand position students make a “flute shelf” with one hand and then create a “banana hand” with the other one.

  • The first three notes kids learn are B - A - G, and their first song comes soon after!

TootSweet (ages 7-12)

Playing together in an ensemble is the quickest way to develop musicality, get a good sense of pitch and keep a solid rhythm. Kids learn lots of different styles of music, playing everything from renaissance dances to movie soundtrack tunes and more!

FluteJam (ages 13-15)

A group class for teens with mixed repertoire including both classical and contemporary styles. In addition to playing familiar melodies in two or more parts, kids learn to step away from the written page and create their own music using improvisation and basic music theory in a pop-song format.
